Saturday 11th October

Another glorious day and what a cracker of a sunset to end the day... Bob this morning had a fall of over 100 Reed Buntings up on Bolsay Moor along with 2 Goldcrest and a female Whitethroat. Up at Corsapol, Bob had a female Yellowhammer, 20 Redpoll and 6 Twite and from the old hide at Gruinart, a Merlin, 20 Pintail amongst the Wigeon and Teal there. Bob reckons that there are around 15,000 Barnies now here, certainly they appear to be arriving all the time...From the new hide this afternoon Bob saw a Peregrine and 2 Pink footed Geese. Down on the Rhinns today, Mary saw a juv White tailed Sea Eagle flying North along the Coast, an adult Golden Eagle and later on a female Kestrel. The Bowland birders, Andy and Jane arrived over for the week today. From the ferry, they saw 3 Porpoises while on Islay itself, they counted 80 Twite on the overhead wires at Octomre and also 2 Moorhen on the "Distillery pond" behind Port Charlotte. Up behind the coal yard at Gortan, around midday, we had a Wheatear. There was a large number of Barnies resting up at the head of Loch Indaal as the tide went out, possibly after feeding under the bright moon last night...
